Ceramic Arts
by
Sheila Watson Coutin

Sheila Watson Coutin has been working in clay
since 1988.
Her pottery has won many awards at galleries and juried shows in
Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Her work is in private collections in the US and in Europe.
Sheila Coutin makes both functional and sculptural
pottery, working mainly with medium fired stoneware. Sheila also works in
raku, a technique adapted from Japan, known for its beautiful luster and metallic effects,
which produces variations in color, so that no two works will ever be the same.

Intrigued by the connectedness of natural and man-made things and the relationships possible
between them, Sheila creates whimsical pieces using both wheel thrown and hand built forms.
Speaking of her work, Sheila says:
"The possibilities are endless. Often these forms seem to develop of their own volition. Are
they allusive, metaphorical, or representational? At this point I don't know, they frequently seem to be a
combination of all three."

River Queen Artisans Gallery is proud to welcome Sheila Coutin, and is currently showing a
variety of her pieces. We feel that the whimsical sense and high level of skill shown in her ceramic
arts make her a wonderful addition to our Lambertville gallery.
